Unbeknownst to us the Leeds Castle Dog Collar Museum (ed: Dog Collar Museum?!?) has partnered with Vintagedogs.com to offer museum quality reproductions of a Medieval period sterling silver dog collar. The original collar that these are based upon was worn by Earl Talbot’s dog Tabinet in London. The collar is made through a laborious hammering process known as repoussé and chasing. Each collar is custom built by NYC silversmith William Manfredi per the dog’s size and dimensions. On the cartouche (a blank rectangle opposite the leash hook) you can have any wording you would like engraved (eg. something classy like “Bitches love me”). All of this proximity to British Aristocracy has a pricetag of $2400.00 but ’tis a pittance for a slice of historical dog style.
New French dog brand Kappachan comes on strong with a killer collection of dog gear designed by 4 scorchingly hot illustrators Taling, KOA, Skwak and ILK. Taking a cue from the streetwear collaborative design trend: Kappachan works with these established artists to create unique and fresh designer gear for your dog. Super-tight French illustrator SKWAK gets toothy with a collar resplendent in teeth baring google-eyed doggies. While fellow countryman and cult illustrator KOA drops a spooky ghostly collar design. More designers are expected to join the Kappachan roster and they have a cat line of collars expected to be out later this fall. While they do not have a US retailer yet their online store is up and ready to sell you all of this freshness!
With a history of designing some of the most luxurious leather trunks in the world (the Bike Trunk, iTrunk and the Krug Champagne picnic trunk) Pinel&Pinel know about leather and exotic skins. And recently they decided to put this knowledge to work for dogs with a colorful selection of collars and leashes made available in leather, crocodile and shagreen. We were left scratching our heads at “Shagreen” as well – only to find out that it is a rare skin made from sharks and stingrays. While the standard stainless steel hardware doesn’t quite match the quality of the skins we will let that slide for now thanks to the wide range of color and textures. Available for purchase by appointment only at the Pinel&Pinel showroom in Paris.
Spring has Sprung and it’s time to PupStyle-ify your pooch with a fresh, new collar and lead set to match this season’s peep toe flats. Petproject.com hand-crafts these refreshingly colorful Dot collars in Los Angeles, CA. Both collar and leash come in 12 sweet color palettes that will coordinate perfectly with your Necco Wafer habit. These spotted cuties are priced extremely well $29-44 for a collar and leashes range $38-42. All this and they are hand made in the good ol USA! Available at Puppies&Babies and other fine retailers.
If your dog’s style is more Preppy Summer Vacation in the Hamptons than L.A. Goth-Punk Squatter, Bella Bean Couture is a label you’ll want to scope out this summer! This San Francisco based designer serves up delicious, colorful, nylon webbing and ribbon collar and leash sets that are perfect for the dog who is always getting messy. We think their designs are the perfect alternative to those cheap, hideous looking, run of the mill nylon webbing collars you’ll find at the big box pet stores. Collars are priced in the $28 range and leads for $38. Not bad for something so pretty and durable! Click here for a list of on-line retailers where you can snag one for your Biff or Muffy.
