Turkey drum stick & Trout chew-toys by Stephen Huneck

Stephen Huneck is a Vermont-based artist with worldwide fans for his whimiscal dog art paintings and sculptures. Huneck is also known for founding the Dog Chapel in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Stephen has recently expanded his artistic acumen to include chewable art for dogs! If your dog is prone to hijacking the holiday turkey from the counter, try keeping him busy with a cool Stephen Huneck Turkey drum stick or Rainbow Trout toy. Both items are common props in Huneck’s paintings and stay true to the original styling. The drum stick has a little hole for stuffing treats (like a Wagatha’s dog treat for a completely Vermont-y treat experience) for hours of entertainment and The Trout is actually a water toy which is perfect for west coast dogs who want to swim off their post turkey dinner pudge. Both toys are available directly from Huneck’s site and cost $14.95.

I’m not sure when you posted this article, but my dog Scooby had to be euthanized as a result of an injury to her tongue from this turkey leg toy. She got the toy stuck on her tongue while I was at work, and because the toy only had one hole, the ‘suction effect’ prevented her from being able to dislodge it. Who knows how many hours it was on her tongue. I rushed her to the ER vet where it was removed and she was placed on pain meds, antibiotics, and anti-swelling meds. Unfortunately, the injury resulted in so much trauma to her tongue that in the days following, her tongue became necrotic and began to fall off in pieces. She was a senior dog and was unable to eat or drink on her own with this injury. After a week, and my only option from the vet being to amputate her tongue and put in a tube for feeding, we decided to let her go so she wouldn’t have a diminished quality of life as an already senior dog with normal age-related health issues. I contacted the maker of this toy at the time, and they refused to do a recall. However, they told me they would ‘redesign’ the toy to have two holes. I am unable to ascertain if this company remedied the problem because I cannot seem to find the toy anymore.
    Sincerely,
    Andrea Kilkenny

There are no words to describe how sorry I am for your loss. That is just beyond terrible and thoughtless design on part of the toy manufacturer. The artist committed suicide a couple of years ago
and I believe the toy was a licensing deal and not him directly. We had no idea toy had a defect when we posted it. I think it was posted about 3 years ago, so it’s been a long time.
I appreciate you educating me and disgusted that the manufacturer didn’t recall the toy or communicate with you. Hopefully it’s off the market entirely.
Again, thank you for your comments and I am deeply sorry for your loss.
    Warm Wishes,
    Dara
