“The Johnsons and their home are part of a larger trend emerging nationwide, says Dara Foster, pet stylist, contributor to NBC’s “Today” and other TV shows and founder of PupStyle.com. The move toward more pet-friendly home design is linked to a cultural shift occurring over the last few years, she says. “We used to call ourselves ‘pet owners.’ Now, it’s ‘pet parents,’” Foster says. “It’s a full-on lifestyle. We treat them like children.”

“As the trend of catering to pets through home design continues to grow, Foster expects even more creative options to emerge.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” she says. “It’s just getting bigger and more lavish by the minute.”

Nothing Says Halloween Like a Hedgehog in a Sheep’s Costume

Once upon a time, dressing up your cat or dog in a Halloween costume was considered “wacky” and you were automatically put in the crazy pet lady/guy category by your family. Fast forward to Halloween season 2016 and it’s not only considered normal, but actually acceptable and eagerly anticipated by pet parents and retailers. In 2015, American’s spent $350 million on pet Halloween costumes. That’s $1 for every $3 spent on a kids costume according to the National Retail Federation. So what’s next? A sweater on a fish?

The small pet costume trend has been steadily growing over the past 3 years. Major pet retailer PetSmart has been expanding their small pet costume selection catering to the demands of guinea pig parents who want to put a tutu on their rodent. Etsy.com is a treasure trove of creative small pet costume designers offering everything from hand-made Yoda costumes for your bearded dragon to sweaters for chickens.

Queen Mary 2 Cruise Ship Doubles Kennel Size – $132 Million Remastering

As pet travel continues to soar in the United States, Cunard’s luxury cruise liner the Queen Mary 2 doubled it pet kennel size during it’s $132 million remastering. The ship now offers 24 kennels, pet owner’s lounge, pet playground and a pet fashion partnership with British sportswear brand, Barbour.

screenshot-2016-09-12-14-16-44

Of course any pooch cruising in luxury requires constant attention and care. Queen Mary 2’s kennel program is overseen by a full-time Kennel Master who takes care of daily responsibilities including feeding and walking pets and cleaning the ship’s kennels. Before the animals arrive, the Kennel Master compiles a list of likes and needs, which he keeps on hand during the cruise.

screenshot-2016-09-12-14-25-13

Like all Cunard passengers, Cunard’s kennel guests cruise in the lap of luxury. Their journey includes freshly baked biscuits at turn-down; a choice of new beds, blankets, and toys; and even a QM2-logoed coat and stainless steel bowl. The QM2 is also equipped with dog and cat life preservers for the ultimate in safety.

If a fancy QM2-logoed coat isn’t enough, guests can purchase luxurious, classic pet beds and waxed Barbour plaid rain coats and collars to match their stylish owners.

Cruising with your pet isn’t new for celebrities. In the 1950s, Elizabeth Taylor brought her pampered puppies onboard the original Queen Mary and exercised them regularly on the ship’s sports deck.  She even ordered custom meals for them from the fish chef.

Cunard’s pet friendly policy dates back 175 years to the maiden voyage of the Britannia in 1840 when the ship sailed with a cow to provide fresh milk for passengers. Years later, Cunard ocean liners sailed thoroughbred racehorses. Rin-Tin-Tin, star of 36 silent films, also traveled with Cunard on the Berengaria.
