From human-grade dog food tailored for your specific dog delivered right to your door, to dog DNA test kits that not only give you the fluffy breed reveal, but teach you about potential genetic diseases for your dog. The National Retail Federation estimates that American’s will spend a whopping $350 million this year on pet Halloween costumes. Finally the days are winding down when the neighbors call you the “crazy dog person” who dresses up their dog.
I am often asked this question “Dara, I can’t decide on what to dress my dog up as for Halloween. What is your advice?”
Tune into the Better Show October 28,2014 for my Halloween dog costume trends fashion show and tips for choosing the right costume. Check local listings for time, but in the mean time you can read my tips below to help you get started.
1. Age–older dogs are less likely to chew on a costume unlike a teething puppy who might turn it chew toy and possibly choke on materials.
2. Size & Shape-think about the size and shape of your dog. A large Yellow Lab or Bulldog might make a better Hamburger than a poodle.
3. Measure your dog carefully-Take careful measurements of your dogs chest, length of his body from base of neck to base of tail, weight, neck and waist. Be sure to compare your dogs measurements to the size chart on the costume. You would be surprised at how being one once off on your measurements and blow your entire costume idea.
4. Brush and groom your dog-Give your dog a through brushing before putting the costume on. It will reduce loose pet hair on the costume and your pooch will look extra spiffy!
